SHOCKING: The Tomb Of Santa Claus Has Been Found
Archaeologists in Turkey say that he is because they found his grave under St. Nicholas Church in the town of Demre.
Since the Middle Ages, people have argued about where the grave of St. Nicholas of Myra is. This is the man who inspired Santa Claus.
His name is on a church, and historical records say that’s where he was buried. However, extensive searches of the grounds turned up nothing of note.
During the Middle Ages, many people thought that Italian merchants stole his body parts from the church. Even a grave that had been dug up and left empty was in the building. During the Crusades, the body of a man thought to be St. Nicholas was laid to rest in Italy.
But the head of Antalya’s Monument Authority, Cemil Karabayram, told the local news that he and his team had found a shrine under the floors of St. Nicholas Church.
The shrine had not been seen before because the floors were covered in a complex mosaic that made them hard to see. He said they found the shrine when they were doing a normal survey.
They found what they thought was a tomb, which could have been where the real St. Nicholas was buried. What about the man who was buried in Italy?
Some experts now say that those bones may belong to someone else and that the grave where St. Nicholas was thought to be buried may have been for someone else.
Even though the find hasn’t been proven through excavation yet, Karabayram is determined to take the next step, even though it will be a long, hard, and complicated process.
When St. Nicholas Church was looked at, some exciting possible discoveries were found.
“We don’t think this shrine has been damaged at all, but it is hard to get to because the floor is covered with mosaics,” he said. “Each tile will have to be taken out one by one for the floor to look like it does now.”
Karabayam is still hopeful that he will find St. Nicholas. He wants to put together a new team of eight different types of scientists to work at the site. The groundwork has already started, and Karabayam says that he hopes the team will soon find out what’s hidden in the shrine.
St. Nicholas is still a big deal in the area, so many people would probably be happy about the find. In another church in the town, there is even a museum about Santa Claus, and a sarcophagus honors the famous saint.
St. Nicholas of Myra was a Greek Bishop in the 4th century. He was known for being kind, especially to children. He was famous for starting the holiday tradition of leaving gifts for loved ones in secret. This is where the story of Sinterklaas and later Santa Claus came from.
It’s not hard to see why St. Nicholas is one of the most well-known Christians ever. But even though there are many stories and facts about his life, not much is known for sure about how he died. And only time will tell if we find out where he will be buried for good.
But one thing is certain: if the recent find of his real grave is confirmed, history books will have to be changed.
