Central to the implementation of the Motor Insurance Database (MID) are several key features designed to empower consumers and ensure the authenticity of motor insurance policies:
Following the purchase of a valid motor insurance policy, insured individuals will receive a confirmation text message verifying the authenticity of their policy. This message includes essential details such as the insurance status, coverage class, policy period, insurance company, and vehicle registration information.
How to Check Authenticity:
Members of the public can easily verify the authenticity of a motor insurance policy using a mobile phone by dialing the designated USSD code (*920*57#) and following the prompts. This convenient method provides instant confirmation of the policy’s validity, including vehicle details and insurer information.
QR Code Scan
The MID introduces electronic motor insurance stickers equipped with QR codes, generated from the MID Portal. These QR codes can be scanned using a QR code reader to instantly verify the authenticity of the sticker and, consequently, the underlying insurance policy. This additional layer of verification enhances transparency and security in the motor insurance process.
It’s important to note that these functionalities not only empower individuals to verify the insurance status of vehicles before boarding but also provide law enforcement agencies, such as the police, with tools to authenticate motor insurance stickers efficiently.
Through the implementation of the Motor Insurance Database (MID), the NIC reaffirms its commitment to promoting consumer protection, reducing the prevalence of uninsured vehicles, and fostering a safer and more secure transportation environment for all stakeholders. This comprehensive approach underscores the importance of leveraging technology to address longstanding challenges within the insurance industry, ultimately contributing to the well-being and prosperity of Ghanaian society.
