SLTF increases tertiary student loan amounts by 50% (¢2,250 to ¢4,500)

The management of the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has increased the amount given to government tertiary students as a loan by 50% with amounts now ranging from GH¢2,250 to GH¢4,500 per academic year.

The tertiary student loan increment unveiled on November 7, 2025, is aimed at improving access to affordable and equitable higher education across the country.

In a statement sighted by GhanaEducation.org, the Fund said the increment was part of broader efforts to enhance affordability and ensure that no student is denied tertiary education due to financial challenges.

“Following President Mahama’s directive, loan amounts have been reviewed upward to reflect current economic realities and to provide meaningful support to students,” the Loan Trust Fund statement said.

Beyond the increase in loan amounts, the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) also announced several other reforms, including:

  The introduction of a Student Loan Plus package, which provides full fee coverage loans disbursed directly to tertiary institutions.

  

• A reduction in loan interest rates from 12% compound to 6% simple interest during the study and moratorium period.

• The removal of the E-zwich requirement for loan applications, with GCB Bank accounts now automatically created through the No Fees Stress portal for easier access and faster disbursement.

  

Dr Saajida Shiraz, Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF, noted that these interventions demonstrate the government’s commitment to building an inclusive and accessible tertiary education system.

“Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, SLTF remains committed to ensuring equitable access to affordable tertiary education in Ghana,” she added.

The reforms are part of President Mahama’s No Fees Stress Initiative, a key component of his Reset Agenda, which seeks to reduce financial barriers for students and strengthen Ghana’s human capital development.
