They advised her to leave her doughnuts and look for a change. They argued that she might bolt with their money if she carried her doughnuts. Unsuspectingly, she accepted their suggestion. It took quite some time to get the change. She returned, gave the boys the change but had a strange feeling that something was not right. She put the tray down and asked them if they had taken more doughnuts.
They replied in the negative, showing her the quantity she had wrapped for them. She was still unconvinced. She could see oil on their fingers and around their lips. She threatened to report them but the boys burst into laughter and drove her out of the house. She later reported the boys to her mother, who confronted them in the presence of their parents. They confessed the offence and their parents, in order to avoid embarrassment, paid for the doughnuts they had eaten. The amount was later deducted from their pocket money.
On another occasion, it was a cobbler they tried to dupe. He was given five pairs of shoes to mend and polish. The boy was excited. He calculated his income and quickly settled down to work, whistling joyfully. When the task was accomplished, Seth came for the shoes and asked the boy to wait for his money. He waited patiently under a mango tree for a long time. Suddenly, he heard the two boys shouting, ‘Attack! Attack! Attack!’ He turned and saw a fierce dog snarling at him. He climbed the mango tree with lightning speed.
