Worrying Observation for the Integrated Science Paper at the BECE

  1. Students who perform poorly in the practical session end up failing the exam.
  2. Students who perform poorly in section A and score below 30/40 often perform poorly in the exam.
  3. Wrong spelling of key words in the answer written by students in their section B of the paper makes many students fail the paper or underperform. Once the key science word is wrongly spelt, the student will often be marked wrong.
  4. If there is a science question that demands calculating for the answers, always show workings.
  5. Write answers and their right units of measurement as well.
  6. Write the answers clearly and ensure that you explain your answers well if required.
  7. Where a table is required as an answer, use a pencil and ruler to draw a nice table.
  8. If a science question requires you to differentiate between two or more terms, etc., draw a table and use it to answer the question. This will help you perform better.

c.i. State three importance of feeding in humans. (3 marks)

• Feeding provides energy for daily activities and bodily functions.
• Feeding supplies nutrients necessary for growth and development.
• Feeding aids in the repair and maintenance of body tissues.
• Feeding supports a healthy immune system to fight infections.
• Feeding provides essential vitamins and minerals that regulate body processes.
1 mark each × any 3 = 3 marks

State three importance of feeding in humans

ii. Give three similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. (3 marks)

• Both have a cell membrane that encloses the cell.
• Both contain DNA as their genetic material.
• Both have ribosomes for protein synthesis.
• Both contain cytoplasm, where cellular processes occur.
• Both perform metabolic activities necessary for life. 1 mark each × any 3 = 3 marks

Give three similarities between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

d. i. Briefly describe how food is digested in the stomach. (4 marks)

In the stomach, food is mixed with gastric juices secreted by the stomach lining. These juices contain hydrochloric acid and the enzyme pepsin, which begin the digestion of proteins. The acidic environment denatures proteins, making them easier to break down. The stomach muscles contract to churn and mix the food, turning it into a semi-liquid mixture called chyme. This chyme is then gradually released into the small intestine for further digestion and absorption. 4 marks

VIDEO EPLANATION: How food is digested in the stomach

ii. Explain what happens to meat before it reaches the stomach. (3 marks)

Before meat reaches the stomach, it undergoes mechanical and chemical digestion in the mouth. The teeth chew and break down the meat into smaller pieces, increasing the surface area for enzyme action. Saliva, containing the enzyme amylase, begins the digestion of any carbohydrates present in the meat, although it doesn’t affect the proteins in the meat directly. The chewed meat is then formed into a bolus and swallowed, passing through the esophagus via peristaltic movements, and enters the stomach for further digestion.

2025 BECE Integrated Science Critical Thinking and Application Questions

Instructions: Answer all the questions. Show all the workings for calculations where necessary.

  1. You are helping your mother in the kitchen. She needs to pour honey into a jar, but it is flowing very slowly. You remember learning about a property of liquids that affects how easily they flow.

    Question:

    a) i. Explain the key term related to the above in science to your mother. (b) Based on your explanation, why is the honey flowing slowly compared to water? 4( marks)

  2. Kwame, a young farmer, has noticed a decline in the productivity of his land over the past few years. He is concerned about the health of his soil and wants to take steps to improve it.

Question a. (Distinguish): Kwame has heard the terms “soil depletion” and “soil erosion” being used, but he is unsure of the difference. Explain the difference between soil depletion and soil erosion in the context of Kwame’s farm. (2 marks)

Question b (Apply): Based on your understanding of soil depletion, identify three factors that might be contributing to the decline in productivity of Kwame’s farm. Explain how each factor can lead to soil depletion which is currently affecting his crop yield. (4 marks)

  3. During a science fair, Kwame is demonstrating the fascinating phenomenon of light refraction. He sets up an experiment with a rectangular glass block and a laser pointer. When the laser beam strikes the glass block at an angle, it bends as it passes through the glass and exits on the other side.

Questions: (a) Law of Refraction: Kwame wants to explain the scientific principle behind this observation. State the law of refraction of light. (1 mark)

    (b) Applications of Refraction: The law of refraction has various practical applications. Explain two ways in which the phenomenon of refraction is used in our daily lives. (2 marks)

  4. A student used a thermometer to measure the temperature of a beaker of water. The thermometer reading was 25°C. Explain, using the kinetic theory of matter, why the water feels warm to the touch. (2 marks)
  5. A metal spoon feels colder than a wooden spoon at the same temperature. Explain this observation using the concept of thermal conductivity. (2 marks)
