Teacher Unions Are Directed By NLC To End Strikes
The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff have been ordered by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to end their strike.
On January 17, 2024, the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) and the Senior Staff Association of the Public Universities in Ghana announced an indefinite statewide strike in protest over inadequate pension and service benefits.

After meeting with the unions on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, in Accra, the NLC Executive Secretary, Ofosu Asamoah, told reporters that it would be proper for the unions to end the strike and begin negotiations with the government to get their issues addressed.
Mr. Asamoah claims that while the unions are still on strike, they are legally unable to bargain.
The administration is prepared to engage in negotiations with the unions, he continued, adding that he thought the unions will follow the order.
Legally, you are not allowed to negotiate while you are still on strike. It is frowned upon by legislation. Not even red bands are acceptable. It’s frightening. Two of the three problems you raised have been resolved.

“The Ministry of Finance has been directed by NLC to convene with us on February 1st in order to address and settle the issue. GTEC must also provide solutions for problems pertaining to overtime and other matters.
They have thus also been instructed to remedy this issue as soon as possible. The Commission tells the unions to end their strike.
