Teachers are their own enemies as they defy strike directives

Teachers are their own enemies as they defy strike directives. The reality is that some teachers and non-teaching staff have defied the strike directives from leadership.

Teachers are their own enemies as they defy strike directives

In the wisdom of the four pre-tertiary education unions, industrial action was declared on 4th July. This required that members of the GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT-GH and TEWU to comply and lay down their tools until further notice.

However, some members who the leaders are fighting for are making the work of the unions and other members difficult because they are still at post providing service, which goes contrary to the directive and the collective decision by the unions.

Reacting to an earlier publication on the non-compliance with the directive, King Yhawkwadwo indicated on the Ghana Education Facebook page, “It is going on all over the country. The evils among us but let’s remain resolute”. Another commentator said, “A typical case is Aveyime Battor Senior High School.” These suggest that teachers and non-teachers who the union leader are fighting for are making the work even more difficult.

If the leaders of the pre-tertiary education unions decide to remain unconcerned, the same teachers will complain. It has been said time and again that teachers are their own enemies.

It is not for funny reasons that the leadership of the unions thought it wise to press home their demands for the Cost of Living Allowance for all teachers to caution them at a time when prices of goods and services have shot up.

The least teachers and non-teaching staff of education at the pre-tertiary education level can do is to follow the directive of their leaders and nothing else. Any other actions which go contrary to the collective decision of the unions amount to sabotage and disrespect, which the union leaders must not entertain.

There is therefore the need to bring such members to order and sanctions applied against any member who would be found acting ultra vires.

The teacher unions have confirmed that some teachers and non-teaching members are not adhering to the directive to strike.

The above are defeating the good intentions of leadership and the earlier teachers and non-teaching staff who are members of GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT-GH, and TEWU follow their leaders, the better.

According to the Unions, members are being coerced by some District directors and head teachers and called on stakeholders to stop coercing union members to undertake any activity during the period since it amounts to an infringement of the Labour Law ACT 2003 (Act 651).

Teachers and non-teaching staff have therefore been asked to comply with the decision of their leaders to ensure the aims of the industrial action are realized.
