No GTLE Pass No teaching – Adutwum to trained teachers

The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum says graduate teachers from various teacher training institutions who do not sit and pass GTLE (Ghana teacher licensure examination) will not be allowed to teach in the country. The message is clear “No GTLE Pass No teaching”.

Dr Yaw Adutwum comment at a meeting with President Akufo-Addo follows the mass failure recorded in this year’s May teacher licensure examination administered by National Teaching Council (NTC) on May 6 and 7, 2021.

Speaking at the teacher licensure examination meeting monitored by EducationWeb.com.gh, the Education Minister said “If you really want to teach we need to help you to have the requisite skills to teach and pass the NTC exams.”

According to him, the Management of the National Teaching Council this year lowered the pass mark for the May edition of the Ghana teacher licensure examination to enable all candidates to pass but unfortunately majority failed.

“About 78% were able to pass two out of the three subjects, but if you look at those who passed all the three for the first time it was about 23% but they have the opportunity to resit again and pass,” Adutwum told Akufo-Addo.

The Member of Parliament for the Bosomtwe Constituency further disclosed the Teaching Council has been tasked to develop a web portal in other for new candidates to access the licensure examination past questions and practice.

“I have instructed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to create a web portal with thousand’s of sample questions for people to have the opportunity to practice and use to prepare to sit for the national examination,” the Minister noted.

The Registrar of NTC, Dr Christian Addai Poku has also said his outfit as part of an effort to promote teacher professionalization in 2025 will phase out or stop all unlicensed teachers from teaching in the various classroom.

“By the year 2025, if an unqualified teacher is still not licensed, the National Teaching Council (NTC) will not hesitate to phase or stop him or her from teaching students in public or private schools,” Dr Addai Poku stated in an interview.
