Dr. Bawumia Denies Ridiculous Vote-Buying Claims and Smear Campaign by Opponents
Frontrunner in the flagbearership contest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted allegations of vote-buying and accused his opponents of conducting a smear campaign against him. As the party gears up for a historic third straight presidential term, Dr. Bawumia firmly denied these accusations, emphasizing the need to expose and reject the spread of baseless lies.
In a recent address to NPP delegates during his tour of the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia pointed to three main examples of these allegations and vehemently denied their veracity. He expressed his disappointment in the attempts to tarnish his reputation and sow discord within the party, describing his opponents’ actions as a strategy to “miss the man” if they “miss the ball.”
The first accusation revolved around an alleged act of vote-buying. His opponents claimed that Dr. Bawumia had bribed 275 constituency chairmen with a hundred thousand Ghana Cedis and a pickup truck each before the party’s Super Delegates Conference. However, he refuted this, emphasizing that no such handouts were given.
The second claim suggested that Dr. Bawumia planned to prevent polling station executives and electoral area coordinators from voting in future presidential primaries. He swiftly debunked this notion, asserting that such an action would be impossible and against his own support for expanding the electoral college to include these crucial voices in the party’s decision-making processes.

Lastly, the Vice President addressed allegations that he aimed to ensure that all sitting NPP Members of Parliament (MPs) go unopposed. Dr. Bawumia clarified that the party’s constitution does not permit this, and he fully supports democratic processes and consensus-building within each constituency.
Although Dr. Bawumia refrained from naming his opponents directly, it is evident that his fiercest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, is the target of these accusations. Agyapong has been vocal in labeling the vote-buying allegations against Dr. Bawumia.
The NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, for the election of a flagbearer for the 2024 Presidential Elections. Dr. Bawumia won the Super Delegates Conference election convincingly and is widely expected to secure victory in the upcoming election. The party is focused on achieving its goal of a third consecutive presidential term.
