TUTAG and UTAG unions walkout during a stalemate with Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC)
Education Unions Unions, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana staged a walkout during a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The two education unions walked out during a meeting held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. According to the leadership of the (UTAG) and (TUTAG), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has acted in ways that suggest bad faith and contempt. They also indicated that the FWSC has shown lackadaisical attention when it comes to discussions on critical sections of their conditions of service.
These shorfalls observed by the university teacher unions left them with no option but to walk out of a meeting that was not going to yield a fruitful outcome.
The associations have declared that they will not allow any form of gross disrespect or lack of commitment from the FWSC as far as their quest for improvement in their conditions of service is concerned.
They have also disclosed that both UTAG and TUTAG will not participate in any meetings that are likely not to help them achieve their results and reasons for attending.
They have a void to use approaches that the government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) understand.
“The voices of university lecturers would be heard soon in the language better understood by the employer or its assignees,” they warned.
Although the unions did not explicitly indicate what they meant and the actions they would take, a strike action may be looming if the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) does not give UTAG and TUTAG a listening ear regarding their conditions of service.
The various universities have just begun their first semester of the 2023–2024 academic year, and every effort must be made to guard against avoidable situations that may disrupt the academic calendar.
