UCC Council Chairman creates commotion over appointment of Registrar and Director of Human Resources

A Ghana Education News Publication | UCC Council Chairman creates commotion over appointment of Registrar and Director of Human Resources

A tempest is building over Professor Harold Stewart Amonoo Kuofi ‘s contentious choices on important administrative positions, just weeks after he was appointed University of Cape Coast (UCC) Council Chairman.

Known for its peace, the university is currently at the focus of an increasingly intense dispute that is receiving national attention.

Without the council’s approval, Professor Amonoo-Kuofi—who also holds the position of Council Chairman at Cape Coast Technical University—went ahead and approved job postings for the positions of Director of Human Resources and Registrar at UCC.

Several Council members objected to his unilateral modification of the advertisement’s content, which deviated from the set UCC 2016 Statutes.

This action has sparked criticism from university stakeholders in addition to drawing criticism. The University Teachers Association (UTAG) and the Ghana Union of University Administrators (GAUA) have both filed petitions requesting that the advertising be taken down.

End of Term Exams

In agreement with the unions’ position, the Academic Board and the Board of Convocation have also voiced their dissatisfaction. Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi’s ongoing affiliation with the Cape Coast  University exacerbates the situation.

It seems that the Education Minister’s earlier cautions regarding the possible conflicts of interest were ignored.

Moreover, rather than putting the problem in the hands of Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi alone, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has stepped in and ordered a halt to any further action on the job advertisements until the UCC Council can meet to consider the matter collectively.

In the midst of these conflicts, there are claims that Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi’s actions may have been motivated by politics, which could potentially weaken the NPP in the UCC region as elections get near.

There will likely be a turbulent time ahead for UCC as the unions are allegedly getting ready for intensified actions, which could involve news conferences, protests, and legal actions.

The events that are taking place at UCC serve as a reminder of the careful balance that must be struck in university governance, emphasizing the value of following established laws and working together to make decisions in academic settings.
