By the end of this week, pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana are expected to resume their strike in protest of the slow and unsatisfactory progress of current discussions over their terms of employment.
Concerns have been raised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers regarding the government-selected negotiators, alleging they lack the necessary power to make firm promises.
The unions had previously put an end to their strike three weeks ago in order to allow for the resumption of negotiations.
They want their rent allowances adjusted, professional development allowances given, and extra allowances given to teachers who work in disadvantaged areas.
Union leaders have reported little progress in talks despite calling off their strike in good faith, which has inflamed resentment within their membership.
Thomas Musah Tanko, the general secretary of GNAT, emphasized the gravity of the situation and his displeasure with the negotiation process. He observed, “There is an uneasy calm,” adding, “The Ministry of Finance needs to understand how serious this problem is.
Their delegates frequently don’t have the power to decide on anything important during these talks. We shall not bear responsibility should the strike recommence.”
