According to the academic affairs of the University of Ghana, all freshers are required to participate in a compulsory programme of orientation from Friday, January 19, 2024, to Saturday, January 20, 2024.

Five key importance of Freshmen attending a university orientation programme

  1. Smoother Transition: University orientation programs act as a bridge between high school and the vastly different academic and social environment of university life. They provide freshmen with crucial information about campus resources, academic expectations, support systems, and student organizations, easing the transition and reducing anxiety about navigating unfamiliar territory.

  2. Academic Preparation: Orientation programs often include sessions on study skills, time management, and accessing academic resources like libraries and writing centers. These workshops equip freshmen with the tools and knowledge needed to succeed academically, setting them up for a strong start in their university careers.

  3. Social Integration: Orientation programs provide valuable opportunities for freshmen to meet peers, upperclassmen, and faculty members. Through icebreakers, social events, and group activities, they can build important social connections, combat loneliness, and foster a sense of belonging within the university community.

Orientation programs introduce freshmen to these resources, ensuring they are aware of the support available and empowering them to utilize them effectively throughout their university journey.

  5. Increased Confidence: By navigating the unfamiliar terrain of university life, participating in workshops, and building connections, freshmen gain confidence in their abilities to adapt and thrive in this new environment. Orientation programs empower them to approach their university experience with a sense of self-assurance and readiness.
