The School Feeding Programme, by the government’s policy and that of the United Nations, is aimed at providing one hot and nutritious meal a day to all learners in beneficial schools.

In the case of Ghana, the programme has become an avenue to serve less nutritious food, which often looks worse than food meant for dogs. While politicians in government and their cronies will not eat such a meal themselves or serve such meals in their homes to their children or dogs, they deem it right to serve it to the children of parents who have opted to enrol their precious children in public basic schools.

From all indications, the government is not committed to the programme and is only doing something to represent another.

The feeding cost per meal per day per child was increased from 80 pesewas (80 Gp) in 2018 to GH¢1, and in 2023, the cost per meal per child per day has been proposed as GH¢1.20. This means that school feeding caterers must feed each child a meal valued at GHS 1.20 a day. This is the genesis of the problem.

How can the government expect those cooking for the future leaders of Ghana to serve a nutritious meal with just GHS1.20, which cannot buy three sachets of pure water today?

In the attached video, a lady who identified herself as a private seller in Manhean 5 JHS school in Osu indicated that the schoolchildren eat the ugly, nutrient-empty school-feeding food and also buy and eat her food. She fears that if this nutrition-deficient food leads to any food poisoning, she is likely to be the first to be arrested, hence her decision to report for something to be done about it.

If the president of the land, the vice president of the land, the minister of agriculture, the minister of finance, and the party leaders of the ruling government will not serve such horrible-looking food to their dogs at home, they, us all, and the nation of Ghana must bow our heads in shame for disappointing ourselves and the future leaders of Ghana now.
