Unemployed youth jailed for 23 months for stealing from seven shops
A 21-year-old unemployed man, Kwabena Tetteh, has been sentenced to 23 months imprisonment in hard labour by the Nkwanta South District Court for stealing from seven shops in Nkwanta town. He pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, causing damage to properties and stealing.
The court, presided over by Mr Joseph Evans Anang Okropa, heard that Tetteh broke into the shops between September 27 and 29, 2023, and made away with various items worth millions of cedis.
The items included flat-screen televisions, laptops, mobile phones, Ghanaian Kente cloths, cartons of frozen chicken, fish, drugs, condoms and lady’s bags.
The prosecutor, Police Inspector Bright Nkansah, told the court that Tetteh’s mobile phone fell off during one of his stealing sprees and was picked up by one of the shop owners who reported the matter to the Nkwanta Police Station together with the six other shop owners.
The police arrested Tetteh on October 2 at his hideout at Nsana Zongo, a suburb of Nkwanta.
He confessed to the crime and led the police to recover some of the stolen items from his room and other places where he had sold them.
The judge, in passing his judgement, said that Tetteh’s actions were dangerous to society and deserved a harsh punishment.
He said that Tetteh had wasted his youthful energy on criminal activities instead of engaging in productive ventures. He advised him to use his time in prison to reform and learn a trade.

The judge also fined Tetteh’s mother, Madam Adwoa Tawiah, GH¢ 1,200 for dishonestly receiving stolen items from her son. She also pleaded guilty and asked for mercy.
The prosecutor said that Tawiah had received several stolen items from her son but did not report him to the authorities.
He said that some of the items were found with her during police investigations.
The case has exposed the menace of theft and burglary in the area and has served as a deterrent to other potential offenders.
