University Competing in a National Debate on Independence Day

On Monday, March 5th, 2024, four prominent public universities will come together for a lively debate to commemorate Ghana’s Independence Day. The University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and University of Development Studies will gather at the University of Ghana School of Law Auditorium for the Advanced Higher Education National Independence Debate. The theme of the debate is “Africa Must Decolonise to Effectively Address the Scourge of Climate Change.”
This National Independence debate is open to the public and is a collaborative effort between the University of Edinburgh School of Social & Political Science, University of Ghana School of Law, Africa Earth Alliance (an advocacy organization), and the National Union of Ghana Students. The funding for this event comes from the University of Edinburgh Principal’s African Partnership Fund.

The main objective of this event is to highlight the perspectives of young people on the crucial topics of decolonization, climate change, and sustainable development. The panel of judges includes esteemed individuals such as Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, Chief Executive of the John A Kufuor Foundation, Dr. Kwabena Oteng Acheampong, Lecturer Faculty of Law, GIMPA, and Dr. Atudiwe P. Atupare, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana School of Law.
Other judges include Mrs. Julia Elysa Selman-Aryeetey, Dean Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Coast, and Mr. Daniel Kyeremeh Oppong, President of the National Union of Ghana Students.
This structured public forum-style debate aligns with the University of Edinburgh’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of well-informed leaders who actively shape the future. It is part of a series of collaborative events between the University of Edinburgh and institutions in Ghana and Zimbabwe.
Prior to the debate, there will be a “Responsive Engagement and Academic Leadership” workshop in Accra on March 4th and 5th, 2024. Following that, an academic writing workshop called “Empowering African Researchers – Workshop” will take place in Harare, Zimbabwe, from March 11th to 15th, 2024.

The upcoming gatherings are designed to unite scholars, students, Pan-African organizations, and policymakers for discussions on pressing issues such as climate change and sustainability. Facilitated by African scholars and intellectuals, the dialogues will prominently feature a decolonial viewpoint.

This long-term initiative is dedicated to exploring new educational prospects for African students and nurturing collaborative research partnerships throughout the continent. Aligned with the University’s key research areas—Health and Care, Data, Digital, and AI, and Climate and Sustainability—the fund aims to drive advancements in healthcare, technology integration, and environmental problem-solving.
