Urgent Call for Assessment Improvements in Ghana from Rethinking Education
Remarkable progress has been achieved in a number of areas within Ghana’s constantly changing educational environment, from teacher professional development to curricular improvements.
Notable changes have taken place in the nation, addressing issues with infrastructure and creating rules for educators, students, and parents.
Still, there is one crucial issue that has to be addressed right now, and that is the antiquated evaluation regime.
A new age of evaluation that goes beyond merely mastering content is about to dawn.
Right now, our educational system is firmly rooted in antiquated evaluation procedures that place more emphasis on rote memorization than on students’ overall growth, universal applicability, skill development, and character development.
Although classrooms have seen a wave of change, the use of antiquated evaluation techniques poses a threat to our progress.
The focus on memorization of facts in order to pass tests stifles original thought, critical analysis, and practical application.
It’s like sowing seeds and not letting them sprout into colourful trees that could influence the destiny of our country.

Students
Our students should receive an education that equips them to handle the challenges of life after school as well as to ace exams.
Evaluations ought to serve as a compass, pointing students in the direction of a deeper comprehension of their topics and promoting the application of knowledge to address problems in the real world.
The idea that being able to repeat information on test day is the only way to determine success needs to change.
Furthermore, the foundation of a well-rounded education is character development.
We must not lose sight of cultivating values like empathy, resilience, dedication, and teamwork while we pursue academic greatness.
Evaluations ought to support and validate these attributes, producing a generation of people who not only flourish professionally but also make valuable contributions to society.

Implications Keeping things as they are would have disastrous consequences.
We run the danger of graduating a workforce that is unprepared to meet the needs of a quickly changing global scene if we don’t make a change in the way we approach evaluation.
The world is shifting towards transdisciplinary cooperation, creativity, and adaptation, and our evaluation techniques need to keep up with these changing demands.

In summary, Ghana is ready to start a thorough evaluation reform process.
In my capacity as GNACOPS’s leader, I support an environment that fosters character development, practical application, and critical thinking.
Let our classrooms serve as breeding grounds for well-rounded people who are prepared to take on the possibilities and challenges that lie ahead.
The first step towards improving education in the future is to redefine what success looks like from teacher professional.
