Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Issues Strong Warning: No Right to Demand without Paying Taxes

In a stern warning, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, has emphasized that individuals who do not pay taxes have no right to demand essential services such as good roads, potable water, and reliable networks. Speaking in an interview with Oyerapa TV, the minister underscored the importance of citizens contributing through taxes to finance the development of the nation.

Addressing the challenges faced by the country, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful highlighted the financial strain and emphasized the necessity of citizens’ participation in financing development such as paying taxes. She stated, “We are all crying about the hardships in the country. As it stands now, we are unable to finance our debts. So, we need to pay for our development.”

Ursula Owusu pointed out that the government can only provide basic necessities when citizens fulfill their obligation of paying taxes. She challenged the notion of requesting infrastructure and services without considering the financial means to achieve them.

“If you don’t want to pay taxes, you don’t want the government to also borrow, where will the government get money to finance development,” she asserted.

Meanwhile, Stephen Amoah, the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, has suggested an increase in taxes as a means to stabilize the economy. He expressed this opinion ahead of the 2024 budget presentation by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, stating that increasing taxes is crucial for restoring and consolidating fiscal policies. According to Amoah, generating internal revenue through tax increases is a necessary step in addressing economic challenges.
