UTAG to Set New Date for Strike Action – Prof. Nunu
The court order calling on UTAG to return to the Lecture hall seems to be in limbo as a result of the constitutional provisions of UTAG which require the 15 member campuses to vote at their various universities on the decision of the NEC of UTAG.
UTAG has been battling the government for the past 11 years on some of their demands that led to the recent 40 days strike action which was called off courtesy of a court order.
“the worsening conditions of service of the university teachers and the failure of the employer in addressing the plight of UTAG members within the agreed timelines” compelled UTAG to organized the 40 days industrial strike
Prof. Solomon Nunu, the president of UTAG speaking to Kwame Sefa Kai on the Kokrokoo morning show on Peace Fm monitored by Ghanaeducation.org disclosed that per the constitution of UTAG after the National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG has called off an industrial strike, each of the 15 public universities would have to undertake a referendum to accept or reject the NEC decision.
UTAG to Set New Date for Strike Action If…
Where more than half of the 15 universities vote in favour of the NEC decision, the strike is deemed to be called off. However, if more than half of the 15 campuses vote against the NEC decision, within 5 days after the results, NEC must set a date for the resumption of the industrial action.
Currently, UTAG-University of Education-Winneba and UTAG-University of Ghana have voted to reject the NEC decision to call off the strike.
While the various university campuses are expected to all organize their respective referendums, UHAS has accepted that the strike action should be suspended, while KNUST resumes today, Thursday, 24 February 2022.
Dr. Nunu indicated that the University of Ghana is not a problem but rather they have expressed their opinion.
UTAG-University of Ghana referendum saw more than 82% of members voting against the NEC decision to suspend the strike.
