The West African Examinations Council has confirmed that five people have been arrested for exam malpractice in the ongoing BECE across the country.
According to WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the suspects were caught for different forms of cheating, though full details are not yet out.
”There have been some incidents so far. About four or five people have been picked up already,” the official said, adding that names and specifics will be shared once investigations are done.
During the time he was speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, May 4, Mr Kapi admitted that even with tighter supervision and invigilation, cheating still happens, so the council is using more strategies to stop it.
These include detailed briefing sessions for exam officials—from district directors to invigilators—to remind them of the consequences of cheating and why integrity matters in exams.
The council also talked about getting the wider community involved in solving the problem, saying that stakeholders like education directors, traditional leaders, politicians, and opinion leaders are being engaged to discourage cheating. “Exam malpractice is bad for our development and the future of education in this country,” he stressed.
