WASSCE 2024 results delay and negative impacts projected

The WASSCE 2024 results for school candidates are projected to be delayed further due to the government’s failure to settle approximately 118 million cedis owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Before the marking of examination scripts began, WAEC disclosed its readiness to work around the clock to release the results between December 9 and 15, 2024.

However, a midday news report on December 11 by JoyNews, as sighted by Ghana Education News, revealed that while WAEC has completed marking the Section B scripts of the WASSCE, its machines for marking objective test papers have broken down. Resolving this issue and other challenges will not be possible unless the government releases the outstanding 118 million cedis owed.

At the time of filing this report, WAEC had not received any updates regarding the pending funds, which are urgently needed to complete post-examination activities and facilitate the release of the results.

Freshers for level 100 have only twenty five (25) days to arrive on various campuses yet still the west African Examination Council (WAEC) has issued a statement to request for 118 million cedis from the ministry of education to repair spoilt scanning machines used for marking of scripts

WASSCE 2024 results delay and negative impacts projected

The delay in releasing the WASSCE results has significant implications for students, parents, universities, and other stakeholders:

  • Students need their results to determine their performance in all subjects, enabling them to complete admission forms for tertiary education. They also need to know if they have failed any subjects to register for the 2025 January First Series, the private WASSCE scheduled for January 2025.
  • Universities and other tertiary institutions require the results to finalize their admission processes and notify successful applicants.
  • Parents need to know the status of their wards’ examination results to prepare for their wards’ university education and other related needs.
  • WAEC also needs to release the results of the exam so it can focus on the private WASSCE slated for January 2025.

In a related development, parents whose wards secure admission into tertiary institutions as first-year students may receive some relief in 2025, as the NDC government plans to introduce a tuition-free education policy for such students.

The general public eagerly anticipates the release of the WASSCE results before the end of the year. The WASSCE 2024 results delay and negative impacts projected are real. The government must step up efforts to ensure the projected challenges do not become the norm.
