WASSCE registration fees remain free — GES Director-General

In a significant announcement that has provided relief to parents and students alike, Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has clarified that final-year students enrolled in the free Senior High School (SHS) program will not be required to pay the GH¢465 registration fees for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as WASSCE registration fees remain free.
This move reaffirms the government’s commitment to the free SHS policy and ensures that education remains accessible to all.
Addressing the media in Accra, Dr. Nkansah dispelled the anxieties that had been stirred among parents and students following reports suggesting that all final-year SHS students would have to shoulder the registration fees.
He emphasized that the fees have been fully absorbed by the government, highlighting that only students outside the free SHS policy would need to cover their registration costs.
The clarification comes as a reassurance to many who were concerned about the additional financial burden this could pose. “All students in government secondary schools under the Free SHS programme are not required to pay any registration fees because it has been absorbed by the programme,” Dr. Nkansah reiterated, easing the minds of countless families.

Furthermore, the Director-General addressed the registration process for the WASSCE, urging school heads not to pressure students currently on vacation to return prematurely for registration.
A collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) aims to extend the registration deadline to April 19, 2024, ensuring students have sufficient time to complete the process once they return to school on April 17.
This decision underscores the GES’s understanding of the logistical challenges faced by students and their families, particularly those living far from their schools, and reflects a considerate approach to their needs.
Dr. Nkansah also took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards the three teacher unions that had recently ended their strike action.
He acknowledged the importance of their decision in allowing for continued negotiations and dialogue, which are crucial for addressing the unions’ concerns and ensuring the smooth running of the education sector.
This series of announcements by the GES Director-General not only underscores the government’s dedication to supporting education but also demonstrates a commitment to dialogue and cooperation with key stakeholders in the education sector.
