WATCH: Ghana rock ‘Fugu’ shirts as they arrive in Qatar for the World Cup
When Ghana players arrived in Qatar before the World Cup, they showed off the best of West African style.
Ghana players wore fugu when they got to Qatar. The Black Stars showed off the best of West African fashion.
Ghana is hoping for a good World Cup because they didn’t make it in 2018. The Black Stars went to Qatar wearing “fugu” fabric from the country’s Upper West region, which was a great display of fashion and culture.
The fabric, which is only worn on special occasions, stands for strength, courage, and leadership, all of which Ghana fans will be hoping the Black Stars show at the World Cup.
“The people of Northern Ghana wear the Fugu, which is a kind of smock. It is worn on solemn occasions and represents strength, courage, and leadership,” said a tweet from the Black Stars official handle.
The Moshies, who came from Burkina Faso and settled in the northern part of Ghana, and the Hausas, who came from northern Nigeria, are said to have brought fugu to Ghana.
Over the years, Ghana has worn a variety of eye-catching fabrics on its way to international events like the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars are back at the world cup after missing the one in Russia in 2018. This will be their fourth time at the tournament, after 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Ghana is in Group H alongside Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea, hoping to advance to the knockout round, with their best-ever performance at the World Cup being in 2010 when they reached the quarter-final.
Ghana will play Portugal in their first game on November 24. On Thursday, they beat Switzerland 2-0, which was good for their morale.
