Who Is Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen? Check Out His Profile

Alan Kyerematen gave notice that he was leaving his job as Minister for Trade and Industry a few days ago.
Alan Kyeremanten is said to have quit his job as a minister, so he could run for leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ghanaians have talked about the news on social media, putting the former Trade Minister at the top of Twitter’s trending topics.
During the time that John Agyekum Kufuor was president, Alan Kyerematen held the same job as Trade Minister from 2003 to 2007.
He has a long and impressive list of accomplishments in international trade, public policy, business development, politics, and diplomacy.
He used to be an Ambassador to the US. Now, he is a Senior Corporate Executive, a lawyer, and a UN Policy Advisor. From 2003 to 2007, he was Ghana’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Presidential Special Initiatives.
During that time, he oversaw the design, development, and implementation of innovative programs and special interventions that have become new strategic pillars of growth for the Ghanaian economy.
He was also very important in setting Africa’s trade policy agenda in the WTO, the EU-ACP Economic Partnership Negotiations, AGOA, and UNCTAD.
Before he became Minister, Mr. Kyerematen was the Ghanaian ambassador to the United States from 2001 to 2003. In that position, he negotiated a number of important trade and investment agreements between Ghana and the United States.
He also started the Ghana-United States Economic Council, which was a key part of making trade between the two countries stronger.
Alan Kyerematen was the first Regional Director of ENTERPRISE AFRICA, the UNDP’s flagship program for developing and promoting small and medium-sized businesses in Africa. He was in charge of the program from 1998 to 2001.
In 13 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Botswana, Benin, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda, he set up programs to help businesses. These programs have helped more than 4,000 entrepreneurs and small businesses in Africa.
Alan Kyerematen was in charge of setting up and running the EMPRETEC Programme in Ghana in 1990. This was a major business development organization backed by the UN and Barclays Bank Limited.
He was also in charge of turning EMPRETEC from a UN project into an independent Foundation. EMPRETEC is now known as a world-class institution and a best-practice model for developing entrepreneurship in Africa.
Between 1984 and 1990, as a Principal Consultant and Head of Public Systems Management for the Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI), Ghana’s top management development organization, he was in charge of a number of large consulting jobs in the private and public sectors.
Before this, he was a senior corporate executive at UAC Ghana Ltd, a subsidiary of Unilever International. From 1977 to 1984, he did a great job in a number of management positions there.
From July 2011 to December 2013, Alan Kyerematen was the Coordinator of the African Trade Policy Centre of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa. He was in charge of helping African countries build their skills in making trade policy and negotiating trade deals.
He was also one of the most important people on the technical team of the African Union that made the Action Plan for the creation of an Africa-wide free trade area.
Alan Kyerematen has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Ghana and a law degree from the Ghana Law School.
He was also a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Affairs and School of Management.
This was part of the US Fulbright Fellowship Program. He was a member of the British Executive Service Overseas (BESO) Council of Governors in the UK, and he has also been on the boards of several other organizations in Ghana.
Time International Magazine named Mr. Kyerematen one of the top 100 Global Leaders for the New Millennium in 1994.
He was on the list with people like Bill Gates and John F. Kennedy Jr. of the United States. In 2013, the heads of state in the African Union chose him to be Africa’s candidate for Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Alan Kyerematen was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on October 3, 1955. He is now 67 years old and is married to Patricia Christabel Kyerematen.
