Who will monitor your appointees’ use of V8s? – Mahama quizzes gov’t

John Dramani Mahama, the former president, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not shrinking his government, which is hurting the economy.

He doesn’t think the policy will work, and he says that its implementation can’t be tracked, so it can’t be seen through.

Mahama says that the government’s rule that appointees can’t use V8s or V6s is unreasonable and that it will be hard for the government to keep track of where appointees go.

He told the government to take the right steps to cut spending, which had slowed down the economy.

“Unfortunately, this budget hits Ghanaians with a lot of new taxes and doesn’t make any real cuts in spending. They just say don’t take your V8s on the road. Outside of Accra, you can use your V8, but you shouldn’t use it in the city. I mean, who’s going to keep track of whether you use your V8? By 80 billion cedis, spending has gone up by a lot. “It looks like we have to learn to live with a government that is too big and bloated,” the former President said.

He said this over the weekend when he spoke to the 13th Congregation of the Accra Business School.

During the budget presentation, the Finance Minister said, “There isn’t much money in the budget for buying cars.” For clarity, new vehicles can only be bought if they are made in the country. Only essential official foreign travel for the government, including SOEs, will be allowed.

Members of the board will not be able to travel abroad for official business. So, by the middle of December, all government agencies should give the Chief of Staff a list of all the trips they plan to take in 2023.
