2022 World Cup: Latest update on Varane after his injury vs Chelsea
Didier Deschamps got some good news about injuries before the World Cup: Raphael Varane won’t miss the World Cup even though he hurt his thigh during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
The 29-year-old seemed to overextend himself to make a tackle, and he left the field in tears during the second half of Saturday’s game. This makes it look like he might not be able to play in the Qatar Showpiece.
But the injury seems to be a lot less serious than was first thought. According to journalist Julien Lorens, an MRI scan showed that Varane hurt his femoral bicep, which will keep him out of action for three to four weeks.
Laurens wrote on Twitter, “I’ve heard that Raphal Varane hurt his femoral biceps, but it’s not as bad as we first thought.”
“He should be fine in 3 to 4 weeks, and the MRI results look good,” they said. He won’t play for United before the World Cup, and Deschamps will have to decide what to do with him after that.
It looks like the center-back won’t play for United again before the World Cup, which is good news for the France manager.

Deschamps has already had trouble with injuries leading up to the tournament. Star midfielder N’Golo Kante, who had surgery on his hamstring last week, is likely to be the biggest miss.
Boubacar Kamara, Paul Pogba, Lucas Digne, and Lucas Hernandez are among the other players who might not play for Les Blues.
If Varane hadn’t been on the team, Deschamps would have had to rely on William Saliba, Jules Kounde, and Benjamin Upamecano to fill in for him.
But this is good news for Varane, who was crying as he left the field on Saturday.
Varane has been an important part of Erik ten Hag’s defense this season. He has played in all but two of United’s Premier League games and has helped his team keep four clean sheets this year.
