2023 tertiary institution fees payment plan announced by GTEC

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced fee payment plan 2023 tertiary institution. The announcement was preceded by GTEC’s directive that no university or tertiary institution in the country should increase fees above 15% of the previous year.

What is the exact 2023 tertiary institution fees payment plan announced by GTEC?

After the announcement, it has gone a step further to direct that given the economic situation in the country, students should be permitted to pay 50% of their full fee for the year.

The call for 50% fees to be paid by students before they start the academic year was a response to the call by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) for tertiary institutions to be made to accept part payment of fees.

“The Students Union in a meeting proposed to GTEC that all public tertiary institutions should be directed to accept 50% part payment of fees to allow students to register and pay the outstanding balances within the year”

“We advise the management of the institutions to consider accepting a 50% part-payment of fees to enable the student to register at the beginning of the year, with a specific payment plan agreed for the balance to be paid, based on individual circumstances,” GTEC said in its statement on the matter.

NUGS has also indicated that, it would report any institution found to be disregarding the directive of GTEC on the 15% ceiling on fees.

“The National Union of Ghana Students will be preparing a report and (publish same) on such illegal actions and will take every legal and reasonable means to correct such injustice on Ghanaian students,” the NUGS leadership said.

The two directives by GTEC have been welcomed by all students, parents and stakeholders as a step in their right direction. What this means is that students who are to pay GHS5000.00 as fees for the year will have the opportunity to pay half (GHS2500.00) then pay the remaining later. However, the directive did not indicate if other fees apart from the tuition shall be paid in the same manner.

Tertiary institutions have already started releasing admission notice to applicants who have been admitted into various programmes. The 2023 academic year starts by Mid January 2023.
