Requirements
The 2024 University of British Columbia Public Scholars Award is open to:
- UBC Vancouver doctorate students (PhD, EdD, and DMA) in years 1-5, as well as UBC Okanagan doctoral students
- Applicants must have completed no more than 48 months of PhD studies as of August 31, 2024.
- Applicants must be registered in a UBC doctorate program as of September 1, 2024.
- Applicants in their sixth year (48 to 60 months of doctorate study) will be considered only in the most extraordinary circumstances.
- All students, faculty, and collaborators will be requested to submit a questionnaire at the conclusion of their funding/involvement.
- This pilot initiative’s evaluation will also include a study of student dissertations, completion rates, and career outcomes.
The UBC Public Scholars Award is part of the UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI), which aims to foster connections, community, and capability among doctoral candidates who want to clearly tie their PhD work to an area of public benefit. This year, funding is available for up to 30–35 new students. Students may be able to renew for a second year (pending fresh PSI funding).
Benefits
The UBC Public Scholars Award provides $10,000 twice, for a total of $20,000 per student, to support innovative/collaborative scholarships that the student might otherwise be unable to pursue.
The funds can be used for:
- A research allowance (including allowance for professional development or travel related to the academic endeavor)
- Student stipend, if the student’s present funding source does not allow for the alternative project(s).
