Others have defended the project, pointing to the philanthropist’s stated record of supporting communities in the United States and other parts of the world.

The village project is reported to include a school capable of accommodating more than 300 students, along with 10 homes for teachers.

It also includes a medical clinic, a community marketplace, clean-water infrastructure, solar power systems and agricultural facilities.
