WASSCE Papers leakage won’t end if our monopoly is broken – WAEC

WASSCE Papers leakage won’t end if our monopoly is broken per the WAEC. While this is debatable, it looks as though WAEC is scared of loosing its monopoly.

The West African Examinations Council after Africa Education Watch petitioned the government to introduce a new assessment institution to compete with them has said that is not the solution to the examination papers leakage.

EduWatch suggestion comes after its independent assessment report of the conduct of last year’s WASSCE disclosed Integrated Science questions paper leaked some hours ahead of the examination on various social media platforms.

Mr Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of the Watch in the report said the government bringing another rival body to compete with the Examinations Council will improve standards under the proposed Regulator of Assessments.

He further recommended for the Ministry of Education (MoE) to set up a regulator of assessment to regulate WAEC before their activities become ungovernable adding that they operate in Nigeria but do not have a monopoly there.

But, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, the Head of Public Affairs – The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) – Ghana, speaking in an interview monitored by AcademicWeek said the move will be a step in the wrong direction.

“It’s not just a matter of having a rival body, we should all try and improve whatever we have to work well for everybody, somebody will say let’s bring another rival but is that what we need and is that going to work,” she noted

The Head, National Examination Administration Department – WAEC, Mr Ben K. Owusu commenting on his part said he is not against the call for another examining institution but further analysis and discussions must be done.

“I am not against bringing another rival but we shouldn’t copy blindly, Nigeria has their own problems and in Ghana, our education should suit the needs of the nation, there is no rival body at the level of WAEC,” the WAEC official said.

The non-profit-making organization (WAEC) in recent years has been criticised by the members of the general public particularly stakeholders in the education sector and students over the serial WASSCE and BECE papers leakage.
