2022 School Choice and Selection: Choose schools based on academic strength not mere preference

As we get ready for the 2022 School choice and selection phase, which starts on 31st October and ends on 18th November, candidates of the just-ended BECE have been advised not to choose schools their academic strength can not match.

2022 School Choice and Selection: Choose schools based on your academic strength – Candidates and Parents Told

This advice comes from Mr. Wisdom Hammond, Team Leader at Ghanaeduction.org to all students and parents.

Very often both candidates and parents are tempted to believe that they will be placed in a highly over-subscribed category A school when they know the candidates’ ability to get placed in such a school on merit is near zero.

The new strategy by the Ministry of Education to make candidates choose schools after the main BECE is not for fun. It is to help parents and candidates measure their performance and sincere projected grades and raw scores to be obtained from the examination and use that knowledge to make informed choices when selecting Free SHS schools. Sadly, many parents, candidates, and the general public are yet to realize this and still make very wrong choices when selecting schools.

It will be a big disaster for parents to choose schools for their wards based on taste and preference.

Candidates are also to note that it is not compulsory to make their first choice from category A or B.

A very good candidate who makes good grades in the mocks and scores at least 380 raw scores may attempt to choose a Category A school as the first choice, but if you do not make such raw scores, why put yourself in the midst of high scoring candidates for a place in a Category A school?

Why not start thinking of category B schools and make one or a maximum of two choices there?

Again for candidates making a choice from category B schools, note that these schools are also very competitive and in all cases, you will be placed based on merit.

If you have not been making at least between 320 and 350 raw scores in your mock, be very careful the way you choose your schools.

Do not also follow friends. Do not choose a school because all your friends are choosing those schools. Instead, ask yourself, based on your Mock score scores, can you make it to such a school?

Our advice to average students is to start making their 2022 School Choice and selections from Category B then to C and to D.

For those who struggle to make good raw scores, or make raw scores of 319 or below, please save your parents and yourself the stress of not being placed and having to look for a school through self-placement. To do this, start to choose just a school from category B, four from category C, and your final option from category D.

No candidate should make the mistake of just choosing any school. Not even in the 6th choice made from all Day schools. This is because you can be placed in any of the 6 schools you choose.

Finally, parents and candidates should note that the competition for boarding school is going to be very high. If you can opt for schools nearer to your residence and opt for a Day school.
