Court Stops University of Ghana New Residential Policy

The University of Ghana’s decision about its housing policy has been put on hold temporarily by an Accra High Court (UG).

This happened because some angry students in Commonwealth Hall of the University filed a lawsuit against the university on Friday, January 6, 2023, for telling living students to look for housing off campus.

This could be a recurring problem at the University since some freshmen always have to rent off campus during reopening periods.

On October 26, 2023, the University of Ghana told the students who were still living in Commonwealth Hall that they had to find a place to live off campus.

“Returning students of Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall will not be able to go back to these halls or any of the traditional galleries. They will be given rooms in any of the UGEL and private hostels that have open rooms.

“Starting with the 2022-2023 school year, only Level 100 and graduate students (Masters and Ph.D. level) will be assigned to Mensah Sarbah and Commonwealth Halls.

Then, at the end of Level 100, undergraduate students will have to move out of the halls and can stay in private hostels until they graduate, UG management said.

But the court’s decision said that things must stay the same as they were before UG’s order on October 26, 2023.

“IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that the Defendant herein is hereby restrained either by itself or by its officers, assigns, privies, agents, workmen, or anyone working under the Defendant’s instructions from going ahead to implement the decision of the Defendant, dated October 26, 2023, about the residential policy decision affecting continuing students of Commonwealth Hall, University of Ghana.

The way things were before the decision on October 26, 2023, must stay the same.
