Gaza Families Turn to ID Bracelets for the Unidentified Dead

- Gaza Families Turn to ID Bracelets to Identify Unidentified Dead Amidst Humanitarian Crisis
In the midst of the devastating conflict in Gaza, the situation has become increasingly dire for Palestinians as mass graves are being used to bury unidentified bodies, with numbers in place of names. This heart-wrenching practice has prompted some families to resort to unique measures, like wearing ID bracelets, in the hope of identifying their loved ones if the worst should happen.
One family, the El-Daba family, has taken drastic steps to mitigate the risks posed by the heaviest-ever Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Following a series of attacks initiated by Hamas militants on Israeli towns on October 7, which led to significant casualties, Ali El-Daba, 40, witnessed the harrowing aftermath of the bombing. Many bodies were so severely damaged that they were unrecognizable.
In a desperate bid to ensure that not all his family members would be lost in a single strike, Ali made a painful decision. He separated his family, with his wife Lina, 42, staying with two sons and two daughters in Gaza City in the north, while he moved to Khan Younis in the south with three other children.
Preparing for the worst, Ali took a simple but poignant step. He purchased blue string bracelets and tied them around the wrists of his family members. His reasoning was straightforward: “If something happens,” he said, “this way I will recognize them.” Other Palestinian families are also taking similar steps, either by buying or making bracelets for their children or writing their names on their arms.
Mass burials have become a somber necessity, and local Muslim clerics have authorized this practice. Before laying the deceased to rest, medics take photographs and blood samples, assigning them numbers to facilitate potential future identification.

The Israeli military has urged people to leave the northern Gaza Strip, one of the most densely populated areas globally, in favor of safer southern regions. However, airstrikes have hit various parts of the Hamas-ruled enclave. An Israeli military spokesperson emphasized the need to strike at Hamas targets while taking precautions to minimize harm to civilians.
The situation remains critical, with Israel’s military escalating its bombing of southern Gaza following one of the deadliest days for Palestinians since October 7. Global leaders are calling for an immediate ceasefire to allow essential aid, such as water, food, fuel, and medicines, to reach the besieged enclave.
Gaza’s health ministry reported a devastating toll, with 756 Palestinians, including 344 children, losing their lives in the past 24 hours. Since the beginning of the conflict on October 7, at least 6,546 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli bombardment, including 2,704 children. The urgency to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has never been more apparent.
