NPP Sylvester Tetteh ‘s Strategic Move: How He Escaped NPP Membership Revocation.

In a surprising turn of events within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the membership revocation on Monday, November 20, 2023, raised eyebrows as the party took action against some members who openly supported former party member Alan Kyerematen. However, conspicuously absent from the list of dismissed members was NPP Sylvester Tetteh, the Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshi-Amanfro.

The NPP, in a statement, announced the suspension of key figures such as Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, and Yaw Buaben Asamoa. These individuals were penalized for going against the party’s stance on endorsing candidates outside the official party ticket.

The party’s constitution, as outlined in Article 3(5)(A)(4), mandates members to “abide by and publicly uphold the decision of the party.” It explicitly states that supporting an independent candidate or another political party when the NPP has sponsored a candidate results in automatic forfeiture of party membership.

However, Sylvester Tetteh managed to avoid being on the list of suspended members. GhanaWeb speculates that his timely move after Alan Kyerematen’s withdrawal from the November 4, 2023, contest played a crucial role in this exemption.

Following Kyerematen’s exit and subsequent resignation from the NPP, Tetteh swiftly distanced himself from the Alan campaign. Instead, he declared his unwavering support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a remaining candidate for the party’s flagbearer position.

In a GhanaWeb report on September 13, 2023, Tetteh stated, “It is obvious that the NPP rank and file support the candidacy of Vice-President Bawumia, and, in that light, I have decided, in consultation with my constituents, to join Team Bawumia.” He emphasized his commitment to support Bawumia for the November 4 elections.

This strategic shift in allegiance, in accordance with the party’s constitution, spared Tetteh from suspension, setting him apart from his colleagues who faced recent disciplinary actions.

Unlike Hopeson Adorye, Nana Ohene Ntow, Boniface Abubakar Saddique, and Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Tetteh’s move aligned him with the party’s endorsed candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ensuring his continued membership within the NPP.

As the NPP navigates internal dynamics and political alignments, Sylvester Tetteh’s calculated decision highlights the intricate dance of party politics and the strategies employed by members to secure their positions within the party.
