Adam Arafat, a 28-year-old spiritualist, was sentenced to seven years in prison with hard labor by the Tamale Circuit Court, presided over by His Worship Mr. William Twumasi Appiah, for the defilement of an 11-year-old girl in Tamale.
Arafat forced the victim’s mother to travel from Bawku to Tamale to seek spiritual assistance from him in January 2020, according to a TV and radio advertisement.
The victim’s mother was asked to acquire items to aid in the spiritual process during the counseling. The 11-year-old girl was defiled in the unfinished building used as a shrine due to the victim’s mother’s absence.
The spiritualist convicted for defiling the 11-year-old girl, Arafat was apprehended by the police and brought before the court after the victim was evaluated at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. The court convicted Adam Arafat liable of defilement after a one-and-a-half-year trial.

Such outcomes are needed in all such related matters where suspects are found guilty as it will serve as a deterrent to link mind persons in our society. Human Rights Organizations such as the Human Rights Reporters Ghana must continue to engage in their sensitization on such issues, to help educate children and parents.
