A Betrayal of Trust as Head of SHSs Introduce Illegal Fees and Prospectus, Disregard GES Directives, Ethics, and Parents’ Trust

A Betrayal of Trust as Head of SHSs Introduce Illegal Fees and Prospectus, Disregard GES Directives, Ethics, and Parents’ Trust. This must stop and we all must speak against it.

The recent news of headmasters and headmistresses in seven Ashanti Region schools being asked to step aside for demanding illegal fees during the admission process paints a concerning picture.

This blatant disregard for the Ghana Education Service (GES) directives, the newly introduced Standardized National Prospectus, and the fundamental principles of the teachers’ code of conduct is a slap in the face to parents, students, and the entire educational system.

These school leaders, entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing young minds and upholding ethical standards, have prioritized personal gain over the well-being of their students and the integrity of the education system.

The collection of unauthorized fees and distribution of unapproved prospectuses not only constitutes financial exploitation of parents but also creates a system of inequality and unfair advantage for those who can afford to pay. This undermines the very essence of free public education and creates a breeding ground for corruption.

Such actions demonstrate a complete disregard for the national effort to standardize and streamline the SHS admission process. The Standardized National Prospectus was introduced to ensure transparency and consistency in fees and information across all public SHSs. By flouting these directives, these headmasters and headmistresses have not only betrayed the trust placed in them but also sabotaged the government’s efforts to improve the quality and fairness of the education system.

This incident serves as a stark reminder to other heads of schools of the importance of ethical leadership. They must uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability. It is their responsibility to ensure that all school fees and practices adhere to the GES guidelines and prioritize the welfare of their students above personal gain.

This incident is more than just a case of misconduct; it represents a deeper systemic issue of corruption and unethical behavior that needs to be addressed head-on.

The GES must take concrete steps to investigate these cases thoroughly, ensure appropriate disciplinary measures are taken, and implement stricter monitoring mechanisms to prevent such incidents from happening again.

Building a transparent and accountable education system requires collective effort from both school leaders and parents. Only then can we create a learning environment that fosters ethical values, promotes equal access to education, and ensures a brighter future for all.
