Buaben Asamoa Criticizes NPP’s Alleged Authoritarian Shift Under Akufo-Addo’s Influence

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, former Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency, has expressed strong concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP), characterizing it as being under the overwhelming influence of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In a recent interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face program, Buaben Asamoa, who recently left the party alongside three other prominent members to support independent presidential candidate John Alan Kyerematen, claimed that the NPP has undergone a transformation. According to him, the party has become factionalized and dominated by the executive, specifically by the president.

In his critique, Buaben Asamoa asserted that the party’s current state is one of division and lack of freedom, suggesting that it no longer serves as an association of like minds seeking common ground. He argued that President Akufo-Addo’s influence has created an environment where party members must align with the president’s wishes to remain relevant.

Buaben Asamoa ‘s remarks come in the wake of the expulsion of four key NPP members—Hopeson Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique—announced by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua. The expulsion was based on the quartet’s public endorsement and campaign for Alan Kyerematen, an independent presidential candidate.
