Can we trust WAEC’s 2021 WASSCE result after wrong grading on its portal?

The big question after the release of the WASSCE result is san we trust WAEC’s 2021 WASSCE result after the wrong grading on its portal? Did the wrong interpretation make the result look better?

The examining body blocked access to individual WASSCE results after it discovered some results did not match the scores obtained by students. Some results had wrong interpretations as grades that should be interpreted as Good were interpreted as Excellent. Results are not keyed into the portal but imported from WAEC’s database. Hence the problem should be with the data based used to release the results and not the website as we are being made to believe.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained that one of its platforms, ERESULTS.WAECGH.ORG, used for checking of results experienced a technical hitch last Friday, December 10, 2021, between 4.45 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.

A message posted on its website explained that the hitch resulted in subjects that originally had Grade B3 with the interpretation, GOOD being changed to Grade A1.

It explained that ordinarily, Grade A1 was interpreted as EXCELLENT, adding that “with the interpretation of A1 as GOOD still showing, clearly indicating an error.

The question is, did the error seen and experienced on the result portal affect the overall reported grades for the various subject in the press release that announced the 2021 WASSCE results? The aggregation of the various grades and the statistics derived from it is based on the grades captured on the WAECs portal at the time the press release was made public. Is it not possible that, these errors might have influenced the results made public and that the corrections done by WAEC after it detected and corrected the error may lead to a significant change in the percentage of students who passed and failed the various subjects?

It would be recalled that there was a rumor that the WAEC website was hacked and that the original results of candidates were changedWAEC has maintained that its systems cannot be hacked. If this position is maintained by WAEC, we need to know the implications of the wrong interpretations on the released results of students. There should be a reduction in passes and a possible increase in the number of students who failed the examination.
