Breaking News: Canada Reduces International Student Permits for Second Year

Current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who announced to resign in March this year pledged to reduce the level of immigration in the country as recent polls showed less support for freshers in Canada. Canada first introduced a cap on new international student permits in 2024 after a spike in population, which led to several complaints about finding accommodation.

According to government data, Canada granted more than 650,000 study permits to international students, raising the number of international students in the country to a whooping record of more than a million. Surprisingly, the 650,000 students were triple of students who entered the country decades ago.

The rapid spike in immigration has placed pressure on services like education, healthcare, housing, and employment. This has led to the high cost of living and the absurd rise in housing costs. Also, international students not on scholarships contribute higher tuition fees compared to others.

However, master’s and post-doctoral students are now required to submit their Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter. Initially, this batch of students were exempted. The attestation letter is to conform that a student is included within the federal government’s international student cap.
