Court jails Man 21 years for sexually abusing his 11-year-old daughter

A court in Accra, Ghana, has given a 51-year-old electrician 21 years in prison for having sex with his 11-year-old daughter in Gbawe.
James Kotaah pleaded guilty to the charges of defilement and incest against him.
Kotaah, who didn’t have a lawyer, told the court that he had sex with the victim, who was his own daughter.
Kotaah said that he had sex with the victim twice, but the victim told the court that he had sex with her eleven times and that he sometimes did it through her anus.
The accused asked to be let go on his own recognizance so he could take care of the child whose mother had died last year.
“My Lord, please tell me what to do. “The victim’s mother is dead, and I’m taking care of her,” he begged.
When Mrs. Christina Cann, who was in charge of the court, gave the sentence, she said that the court had thought about the things that made the situation worse.
The trial judge said that the court had thought about how bad the crime was, how often it happened, how disgusted law-abiding people were, how old the victim was, what kind of trauma she had been through, and how close she was to her father.
The court gave the accused 21 years for defilement and 21 years for incest, all of which will run at the same time.
The judge told the case investigator to take the victim to the Police headquarters to get help from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Agnes Boafo said that the complainant was a trader who lived in Gbawe, Accra and that Kotaah and the victim, who was his biological daughter, also lived nearby.
The prosecution said that the victim was in grade three and was 11 years old. They also said that Kotaah lived with the victim, who had lost her mother a year before, in a kiosk.
The accused, who is now a convict, had been having sex with the victim for a while, and the victim told her headteacher about it.
It said that on October 24, Kotaah came back from town around midnight while the victim was asleep. He then had sex with her from “behind” and told her that if she told anyone else, she would die.
The prosecution said that the victim told her aunt about the pain she felt after the act.
Later, the prosecution said that the accused person had been caught by the Ghana Police Service’s Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit at Odorkor.
