Court sentenced barber, another to 32 years for robbery
For robbery, an Accra Circuit Court sentenced two people to a total of 32 years in prison with hard labor.
Yaw Ofori Asiamah, a barber, and Emmanuel Ocran Kounakey, an unemployed man, denied conspiring to steal a trader’s purse, which contained a mobile phone and GHS44.00, but were found guilty after trial and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The complainant, according to Police Chief Inspector John Gohoho, is Madam Comfort Korkor Dapaah.
He stated that both convicts, Asiamah and Kounakey, lived in Nungua Addogono and that on May 4, 2022, around 0030 hours, the complainant had finished work at Nungua Abrantee College and was on her way home when the now convicts, who were roaming the area looking for vulnerable and unsuspecting people to prey on, spotted her on the road.
According to Chief Inspector Gohoho, the convicts began stalking her and pounced on her when she reached the darkest section of the road.
According to the Court, the two pulled out a knife and a pair of scissors and threatened to stab the complainant.
They then slapped the complainant across the face with a powdered red-hot substance believed to be ground pepper before fleeing the scene with the complainant’s plastic bag, which contained her black purse, a Samsung mobile phone, a Voter’s ID card, and GHS44.00.
He stated that the complainant reported the incident to Nungua Police. Approximately two hours later, police officers at Nungua Addogono conducting a routine duty check spotted the convicts in a taxi.
He went on to say that a search of them turned up a knife and a pair of scissors.
According to the prosecution, a subsequent search of the taxi revealed the complainant’s purse and the stolen items.
Based on this, the convicts were arrested, and during the course of the investigation, they admitted to the crime in cautioned statements and were charged.
