Establishing a National Defence University timely for regional security — GTEC
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has recently underscored the strategic importance of establishing a National Defence University in Ghana, a move poised to significantly enhance regional security by providing advanced training and knowledge to security services within and beyond the country’s borders.
Following a pivotal meeting with the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lt General Thomas Oppong Peprah, at GTEC’s headquarters, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor, the Director-General of GTEC, expressed optimism about the project.
He highlighted that the envisioned National Defence University would not only fortify Ghana’s security service capabilities but also serve as a vital educational resource for neighboring countries in the sub-region.
This collaborative venture between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and GTEC aims to replicate the success seen in other nations, such as Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya, and the United States, which have established similar institutions.
These universities are crucial for fostering a well-educated security force capable of addressing contemporary security challenges.
Prof. Jinapor articulated his vision for the university, emphasizing its role in national security rather than being exclusive to the Ghana Armed Forces.
He encouraged other paramilitary institutions to leverage the educational opportunities the university will offer instead of establishing separate entities.
This approach seeks to unify and strengthen the security and defense sector’s educational framework in Ghana and, by extension, the West African sub-region.

Additionally, Prof. Jinapor advised maintaining a focused academic offering, cautioning against diverging into programs outside the university’s intended scope and mandate.
This guidance aims to ensure the institution remains dedicated to its core mission of advancing national and regional security through specialized education and training.
Lt Gen. Peprah expressed his commitment to furthering the partnership between GAF and GTEC and conveyed his gratitude for the support and congratulatory messages received upon his appointment as CDS.
His visit to GTEC marked a significant step toward solidifying the collaboration essential for the National Defence University’s success.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing the evolving security landscape in West Africa and beyond.
By investing in the education and training of security personnel, Ghana is positioning itself as a leader in regional security efforts, demonstrating the critical role of specialized education in national defense strategy.
