The Ministry of Interior has officially declared Wednesday, 27th May 2026, as a public holiday. This public holiday marks the 2026 Eid-Ul-Adha.

The press release signed by the minister of interior, MUNTAKA MOHAMMED-MUBARAK (MP), read as follows: “The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 27th   May 2026, marks Eid-Ul-Adha, which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

It was signed and issued on the 15th of May, 2026

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It honors the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who demonstrated absolute willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to a command from Allah. Before the sacrifice could take place, Allah mercifully provided a ram to be slaughtered in the child’s stead. Observed at the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, this holy day unites Muslims worldwide through special congregational prayers, vibrant community gatherings, and the donning of fine attire.

The core significance of the holiday lies in the values of obedience, gratitude, and communal charity. Families who can afford it ritually sacrifice an animal—such as a sheep, goat, or cow—to commemorate Allah’s intervention and mercy. Crucially, the meat is divided into three equal portions: one-third for the immediate family, one-third for friends and relatives, and the final third strictly for the poor and needy. This distribution ensures that the spirit of generosity prevails, fostering deep social bonds and guaranteeing that the less fortunate can participate in the joy and abundance of the festival.
