In a devastating incident that unfolded late on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, more than 10 shops were reduced to ashes at Golden Gate in Budumburam, the Gomoa East District of the Central Region. The cause of this destructive fire, as revealed by reports from Rainbow Radio Accra, was traced back to faulty electrical cables.

The Ghana Fire National Service branch in the Kasoa Metropolis confirmed the locals’ initial suspicions regarding the source of the fire outbreak. D03 Sarah Obimpeh, Commander for Budumburam Fire Service, provided insights into the challenges faced by the firefighters upon reaching the scene.

She lamented that the swift containment of the fire was hindered because the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) did not promptly shut down the main power. This delay, attributed to the proximity of the incident to the GRIDCO main line, exacerbated the situation, resulting in the loss of more than 10 shops.

Commander Obimpeh expressed the urgency for more cautious venue approvals from the local Assembly, emphasizing that the location of the affected shops, beneath high-tension electrical lines, was perilous for commercial activities.

She urged the Assembly to reconsider granting permission for businesses at Golden Gate in Budumburam to operate in such hazardous zones to prevent future tragedies.

“Where the shops are even situated under the high tension is not good, and from here we will speak to the Assembly not to give people access to sell at such stations because it is dangerous,” warned D03 Sarah Obimpeh.
