Declaring Strikes through press conferences are illegal – NLC Boss
The Boss of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ofosu Asamoah, has declared that announcing strikes through press conferences is not only inappropriate but also illegal.
In a detailed discussion with Kemmini Amanor on TV3’s “Hot Issues” program, which aired Sunday, April 21, Asamoah emphasized that the correct legal procedure requires unions to formally notify their employers and the NLC at least seven days in advance of initiating a strike.
Asamoah clarified, “Strikes are perfectly legal; however, the law specifies that unions must communicate their intentions in writing to their employers and also inform the NLC within the stipulated notice period.
Announcing such actions through press conferences does not meet legal standards.”
Throughout the interview, Asamoah pointed out the profound mistrust existing between labour unions and the government, which often leads to industrial actions despite governmental promises to address union demands.

This atmosphere of suspicion complicates the interactions and undermines the potential for constructive dialogue aimed at resolving disputes.
Asamoah also reassured that the structure of the NLC prevents any bias towards either the government or the unions, ensuring that all parties are treated with fairness.
He stated, “Given the composition of the NLC, it is nearly impossible for us to show bias towards any side. Our role is to facilitate a balanced approach that respects the rights and responsibilities of both parties.”
