Pelé took to social media to express his condolences and share memories of Maradona, whom he referred to as a “great friend.” In a tweet, Pelé wrote, “I have lost a great friend and the world has lost a legend. One day, I hope we can play soccer together in the sky.”
His touching words that is remembered today is on the year 2020, when Maradona died, Pelé remarked, “One day, I hope we can play football together in the sky.”
Pelé and Maradona were often compared to each other during their respective careers, with many fans and experts debating which of the two was the better player. Despite the rivalry, the two soccer greats had a deep respect for each other, and Maradona even referred to Pelé as his “idol.”
In an interview with ESPN, Pelé reflected on his relationship with Maradona and how they first met. “I had the pleasure of meeting Diego for the first time in 1980,” Pelé said. “From that day on, we were great friends. We shared many things, on and off the field. We laughed a lot, and I will always remember that.”
Pelé went on to describe Maradona as a “genius” on the field and a “big hearted” person off the field. He also praised Maradona for his impact on the sport of soccer, saying that he “revolutionized” the way the game was played.
