Free Zones Authority Acting Chairman, Joojo Fosu abandons NPP for Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change
Accompanied by an air of political defiance, Joojo Fosu, Free Zones Authority Acting Chairman and an appointee of President Akufo-Addo, has severed ties with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to throw his weight behind Independent Presidential Candidate Alan Kyerematen.
Despite his allegiance shift, Free Zones Authority Acting Chairman continues to maintain his position within the NPP government, a move that has sent shockwaves through political circles. Dressed in the symbolic ‘butterfly cloth’ of Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, Fosu’s public endorsement is viewed as a resounding vote of no confidence in the Akufo-Addo administration and the NPP’s prospects in the 2024 general elections.
The NPP, responding to this unexpected development by Free Zones Authority Acting Chairman, Joojo Fosu, cited Article 3(9)(1) of its constitution, which mandates the automatic forfeiture of membership for any party official publicly supporting a presidential candidate outside the party’s fold. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong emphasized this provision in a statement released on November 20, 2023.

In a surprising turn of events, the NPP leadership announced the expulsion of prominent members Adorye, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, Nana Ohene Ntow, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique for their open endorsement and campaign for Alan Kyerematen as an independent candidate. The party accused them of a “flagrant breach” of its constitution, pointing specifically to Articles 3(5) (A)(4) and 3(9)(1). The statement underscored the imperative for members to adhere to party decisions, as outlined in Article 3(5) (A) (4).
Article 3(9) (I) of the NPP constitution, highlighted by the leadership, reiterates that any member supporting an independent candidate over the officially elected party candidate automatically forfeits party membership.

In response, the NPP called on its remaining members to steadfastly support the officially elected Presidential Candidate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, and to unite in their efforts to secure victory in the upcoming 2024 polls. As the political landscape undergoes a seismic shift, the ramifications of these high-profile defections on the party’s cohesion and electoral strategy remain to be seen.
