Furnish us with plan, cost of National Defence University – GETFund Administrator tells CDS
The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is set to play a pivotal role in the establishment of the National Defence University, an ambitious project led by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
With the project aiming to consolidate and enhance the educational framework within the armed forces, GETFund’s involvement signifies a crucial support mechanism in realizing this vision.
The Administrator of GETFund, Dr. Richard Ampofo Boadu, has called upon the GAF to provide detailed plans and cost estimates to ensure that the project’s completion and successful launch are achieved efficiently.
In discussions with Lt General Thomas Oppong Peprah, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Dr. Boadu emphasized the importance of understanding the project’s scope, including whether it will be executed in phases and the total cost involved.
This clarity is essential for GETFund, which operates on a budget approved annually by Parliament, to allocate funds appropriately and determine its contribution towards the project.
Dr. Boadu also raised the possibility of GETFund covering the full funding of the university, suggesting a long-term financial commitment spread over five to ten years, contingent on budgetary provisions.

The engagement between GETFund and the GAF comes at a time when the military institution seeks to bolster its academic offerings by integrating various educational institutions under the National Defence University umbrella.
This move, aimed at fostering a unified and robust academic environment for military education, requires significant financial investment and strategic planning.
Moreover, Dr. Boadu addressed the issue of stalled projects within the tertiary institutions under the GAF, proposing a solution through a newly developed funding system.
This system, characterized by a pool of funds accessible to all tertiary institutions, encourages contractors to work at full capacity, ensuring the timely completion of projects.
An initial GH¢10 million has been earmarked by GETFund for the university project, indicating a solid start to the funding efforts.
Lt General Peprah, recognizing the longstanding partnership between GETFund and the GAF, expressed his commitment to not only maintaining but also enhancing this relationship.
With the National Defence University set to encompass various prestigious institutions, including the National College of Defence Studies and the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, its establishment is poised to mark a significant milestone in military education in Ghana.
The collaboration with GETFund underscores the collective resolve to advance academic excellence within the nation’s defense establishment, promising a brighter future for military education in Ghana.
