The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has procured 150,000 doses of oral cholera vaccines as part of efforts to control the ongoing cholera outbreak in the country. The oral doses were secured in partnership with GHS donors and partners.
Speaking at the press launch on Friday, 29th November 2024, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye urged the public to maintain proper Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) standards, drink safe water, and consume hot meals post-vaccination, as the vaccine offers additional protection and is not a replacement for preventive measures.

The first phase of the campaign against cholera runs from 30th November to 3rd December 2024 across the country to help sensitize Ghanaians on the worrying health issue.
The campaign will target all individuals aged two years and above in three hotspot sub-districts of the Awutu Senya East District: Akwelley, Kasoa North, and Odupong Kpehe. This special targeting aims to contain the spread of cholera within these hotspots.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr. Frank Lule, reaffirmed partners’ support and called on the media to counter misinformation.

Since the outbreak was confirmed on 4th October, Ghana has recorded 2,385 suspected cases, 196 confirmed cases, and 21 deaths. This campaign aims to curb the spread and safeguard lives through vaccination and preventive efforts.
The 150K doses of Oral Cholera Vaccines to control cholera in the affected areas is expected to help bring the spread under control.
Some of the basic tips for dealing with Cholera are as follows
- Ensure Safe Drinking Water: Always drink water that has been boiled or treated with chlorine to kill bacteria.
- Practice Proper Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands with soap and clean water before eating and after using the toilet to prevent contamination.
- Consume Safe Food: Eat freshly cooked meals, avoid raw or undercooked seafood, and wash fruits and vegetables with clean water.
- Dispose of Waste Properly: Safely dispose of human waste and garbage to avoid contaminating water sources.
- Rehydrate Promptly: Use oral rehydration salts (ORS) or homemade solutions of salt and sugar in clean water to combat dehydration.
- Seek Immediate Medical Attention: If you experience symptoms like diarrhea and dehydration, visit a healthcare facility promptly for treatment.
