‘Good man’ Akufo-Addo blessed me with $2,000 at a critical time in my life – Bernard Mornah reveals

Political activist and former National Chairman of the Peoples National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, recently shared a heartwarming anecdote about then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ‘s benevolence. In a conversation with Ohenewaa Kesse Boahen on CTV, Mornah disclosed that Akufo-Addo, now the President, provided him with crucial support in the form of a $2,000 financial gesture during a pivotal juncture in his life.
At the time, Bernard Mornah was vying for the position of PNC General Secretary. Faced with the challenge of not having a vehicle, he intended to commute via bus from Neoplan Station to the Congress ground in the Northern Region. Mustapha Abdul Hamid, then an aide to Akufo-Addo, intervened by guiding Mornah to meet the aspiring leader behind the Odo Rice building at Circle, Accra.
Recalling the encounter, Mornah expressed gratitude for Akufo-Addo’s unexpected generosity. “President Akufo-Addo has been a very good person to me because when I was about to run for the general secretary slot of the PNC for the first time, he gave me US$2,000,” Mornah revealed. According to him, Akufo-Addo extended his well-wishes for Mornah’s candidacy and handed over the financial assistance without counting it. “Young man, I’m told you’re going to run for general secretary. I wish you all the best… Akufo-Addo then pulled the money. He didn’t count. It was US$2,000,” Mornah recounted.
Gratefully acknowledging Akufo-Addo’s support, Mornah disclosed that the timely financial boost prompted him to alter his plans. Instead of relying on public transportation, he opted to rent a car for his campaign activities. The decision proved fruitful as Mornah secured a resounding victory in the election, defeating competitors and subsequently retaining the position in 2012.
Mornah’s political journey continued to ascend, with his election as the National Chairman of the PNC in 2015, solidifying his status as the youngest individual to hold both the General Secretary and National Chairman positions within the party.
